Level 16 (2018)

This was a movie that I found while just browsing my film channels and decided to give it a watch. The description on my TV was vague, about a dystopian boarding school, and sometimes I like those kinds of movies so I decided to give it a watch.

And boy was I blown away.

In a way, this movie reminded me of when I was pre-teen, 13-15 or so and when I would frequently browse through the numerous creative scary stories written and posted on Reddit. The plot of this film feels like it was directly pulled from there, as it's that original.

The TV description of this movie is rather vague so I did watch it somewhat out of boredom. From the start of the movie, I was already guessing what the secret behind this place was. A tightly strict security facility that held girls from birth to age 16. Perhaps you can guess what I was expecting (yes, it's dark) but the actual reveal was much different and caught me off guard as a result.

The filming does a great job at making the viewer feel confined within the building along with the girls. There's also not too much given away at once, keeping a sense of mystery throughout the film. You also are able to connect with the characters, and you want them to escape.

Spoiler talk time, The reveal that these girls are being farmed for mainly their facial skin was pretty surprising to me. The visual of surgical scars on the back of the one headmasters head and neck was particularly disturbing. While I personally wanted them go into this grotesque concept further, sometimes less is more I suppose.

Overall, I would definitely recommended this to horror/thriller lovers.
