Knives Out (2019)

Typically, I don't watch too many mystery movies. As someone who finds it difficult to focus on pretty much anything, I really have to be completely undistracted and in the right mindset to enjoy one. Knives Out interested me because of Toni Collette, who had given an incredible performance in 2018 film Hereditary. So I ended up seeing this one with my friend.

Any spoilers will be blacked out, highlight to read them.

This movie is pretty standard in terms of the filming and sound. It's generally nice all around and the performances are all great, though it sometimes felt like not everyone gets the same amount of screen time. But in the parts they do get, they really shine, even if it is mainly for comic relief.

The writing of this film is where it really shines. This did keep me guessing as the plot takes several different turns which really keeps the audience interest. The lesser characters are still included in the investigation, leaving them as possible suspects.

As for the culprit; I did in fact suspect the son from the very beginning but the plot later made me assume he was out of the picture which is a pretty clever mislead. The creative plot point of Marta being unable to lie without vomiting, while probably unrealistic, is really unique and added plenty of humor. The detective on the case really adds a lot to the humorous side of things too. You'll either find him annoying or funny, I thought he was more funny.

As for the events that really took place on the night of Thrombey's death are somber but quite unique and different from your standard murder mystery case. The sequence of events makes this film very memorable, along with the cast of familiar faces.
