The House That Jack Built (2018)

With my family having recently switched TV providers, I have quite a few movie channels now. Among them are a few I had been wanting to see.

The House That Jack Built is one of them, as I heard it was a disturbing one.

This review is, for the most part, spoiler-free.

Some of the violence in this film rather surprised me, which is strange considering I'm usually numb to most horror scenes. There's a scene in particular where there's violence against children which many viewers might find especially gratuitous.

The story doesn't take a long time to get going, which is good considering the 2 hr and 35 min runtime. The film itself is divided into 5 "episodes" or stories from Jack's life, each of them detailing a gruesome event. Without getting into spoilers, each of the episodes has a realistic feel to it and one in particular was a little but relatable to me, in which Jack has an OCD related breakdown. This involved him going back to a crime scene and re-cleaning areas in the room. I found this to be a surprisingly realistic touch and I appreciated seeing it.

In terms of style, one could consider this film to be very "artsy". There's lots of unique shots that include voiceovers by our lead character which gives the film it's own tone in a way. Additionally, the ending is to this film is one that many people disliked or found to be "silly". I personally disagree and found the ending [ twist involving Dante's Inferno  ] I can definitely understand why some people find it to be out of place. For me personally, who grew up in a religious home, I found the ending to be clever and even a little creepy.

All in all, The House That Jack Built is a lengthy film, but it might be enjoyable to serious film goers. For horror lovers, it's definitely both a gory and somewhat eerie watch.
