Fun Fact; I'm a recent Marvel fan and only really got into it after seeing the many Thanos memes. I did see the original Iron Man film in 2008 with my family but that was it.
I saw Spider-Man Far From Home unexpectedly with my friend Hannah, but I definitely enjoyed it, especially with having seen the terrifying Midsommar the day before. It was a much needed enjoyable viewing.
I actually really enjoy this iteration of Spider-Man. It's much different from the trilogy with Tobey Maguire I watched as a kid, and, in my opinion, a lot better. While I haven't seen Spider-Man Homecoming, I still really enjoy the idea of a younger Spider-Man. Tom Holland does a great job with portraying him and he actually looks like a high school student, while Maguire....well, didn't look like a teen much at all.
His relationships with other characters feel much more fleshed out too. Some might oppose it, but I love what they did with Mary Jane (who's simply called MJ in this version). In the older films, she just didn't have much of a personality at all and seemed like she only existed to serve as Spider-Man's love interest. But in these, she actually has a personality and I thought her and Peter were actually cute together. So no, I don't mind at all that she's a different race. All of her lines were hilarious and she felt like her own person. Spider-Man having a best friend, who knows he's Spider-Man was really great too.
For more with the writing, the story is great. I love the idea of Spider-Man on vacation with his classmates, and just wanting a break from it all, but of course it doesn't go according to plan. I had limited knowledge of the comic characters so when Mysterio seemed like he was helping I actually was a little surprised as I 'thought' he was a villain. So yes, the twist that he was faking everything to gain Parker's trust did kind of get me a little. As for everything else, the comedy in this movie is great, I especially loved the teachers, and seeing all the different travel locations. (Netherlands! My friend lives there!)
My favorite part of the film was honestly the incredibly low budget 'tribute' to our heroes who passed in Endgame (even the teenagers remembered Vision!) and all of the tributes, memorials, and references to Tony Stark were really well done. It was also a reminded of how Parker is probably dealing with it still as well.
The sound is pretty standard for a Marvel film, but I enjoy the additional choices on the soundtrack. The credits scene animation set to Vacation by The Go-Go's was a joy to watch. For added fun, check out the companion book "Peter and Ned's Ultimate Travel Journal".
Overall, good and light hearted.
