A fact about me, I only just recently discovered that I enjoy war movies. I found this out after watching the horror/sci-fi Overlord back in 2018, which was set in WWII. The supernatural elements of the film didn't kick in until closer to the end, but I found myself enjoying the movie anyways. And since I found the trailer for 1917 to be interesting I feel like it confirmed that I do in fact like war movies.
This is a spoiler free review.
Much of the buzz surrounding this film is many of the long shots and the way it's filmed. The talk is well earned; as many of the shots in this film are impressive. A good majority of the scenes are done in one long take as we follow our main character. A few behind the scenes clips show the vast amount of effort that went into creating these shots, and it certainly must have been time consuming to make sure each one came out perfect, with the actors and extras all doing their correct roles.
The story of 1917, as simple as it is, is easy to follow, yet still engaging and keeps most viewers heavily invested. The plot doesn't go off into side-plots and our main focus is on wether or not this message will get delivered in time. The film doesn't delve into politics, or into which side is right or wrong, it very much feels like a neutral view.
The set design of this film is incredibly well made and feels very accurate to the time period. Many of the locations are even beautiful, despite having become a war zone. The night sequences are also well done and the shilloutes are quite stunning to look at.
A surprising aspect of this movie for many might be just how it shows the horrors of war. I wasn't expecting anything super morbid going in and was surprised at some of the portrayals of war carnage and leftovers. Many of them were unsettling and severe as a reminder that war is never pretty.
This is a very well made war flick and one that I definitely will be buying on DVD.
